# The quiet geometry of stations

Every large station has the same twenty minutes: after the first commuters and before the second wave, when the roof is the loudest thing in the building. These photographs were made in those minutes, over one winter.

The engineers who drew these roofs were not thinking about photographs. They were thinking about smoke, snow load and the length of a train. The geometry is a side effect, and it is the best thing about them.

The clock is the only thing in the hall that is not on a grid.

## Ribs and glass

Look up and the roof resolves into ribs, purlins and panes, each repeating at its own interval. Look down and the platforms repeat at another. The pleasure is in the two rhythms not quite agreeing.

Three platforms, three intervals.

By eight the hall is full and the geometry disappears behind people, which is what it was built for.
