Concrete was sold as permanent. It is not; it weathers, stains and grows moss in the places where water lingers. The best concrete buildings were drawn knowing that.

The library's fins throw water clear of the windows, and the stains follow the fins.

## Drawn for rain

Look at the fins on the library's facade. They are deep enough to shade the glass, and their lower edges are cut back so water drips clear instead of running down the face. Fifty years later the streaks run exactly where the drawing said they would.

Stairs to the upper terrace, after a storm.

A building that weathers as it was drawn to is ageing well. One that weathers by accident is just getting dirty.
